The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (District) is providing incentive funding to increase green roof coverage within its service area. The Regional Green Roof Initiative will provide up to $5 per square foot of an approved green roof project.
SUMMARY
The District’s interest in green roofs is to hold rainwater where it falls, thereby diminishing the risk of sewer overflows and improving the overall water quality in the region. In addition to managing stormwater, green roofs offer numerous additional environmental, economic, and social benefits. Added benefits include:
Environmental
- Reducing the urban heat island effect
- Improving air quality
- Increasing urban green space and wildlife habitat
Economic
- Extending roof life by protecting the roof membrane from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays and temperature extremes
- Potentially lowering building heating and cooling costs
Social
- Reconnecting the community to the natural environment
- Providing urban green space and educational opportunities
Requirements:
- Projects must be located within the District’s service area.
- Projects cannot be complete prior to the application deadline.
- Applicants will be required to enter into a funding agreement with the District
- Projects must be completed within two years from the date of the signed funding agreement.
- Applications accepted from building owners or developers only (no vendor applications will be accepted).
- Minimum 3” depth of growing media required or demonstrated 1” stormwater retention.

- Size of green roof
- Ratio of green roof area to total roof area
- Benefits accrued to public
- Economic Development

- Visibility
- Sustainability
- Completeness and accuracy of application

Conditions (Applicable to Approved Projects):
- Applicant will allow the District to publicize the project.
- Applicant will allow access to the project site for the purposes of inspections and educational tours.
- Applicant may be asked to make roof available for, and participate in, ribbon-cutting event or tour.
- Applicant will submit a Final Report (template provided by the District).
- Applicant agrees to install educational signage designed or approved by the District.
- Applicant must agree to maintain the roof for a minimum of 5 years.
- Applicant will complete SWMBE* and Economic Impact Reports (provided by the District).
- Unless negotiated separately, applicants will not be required to monitor stormwater retention volumes
